Turnt Ends – Kansas City Brown Ale

One of the questions we’re asked the most is, “Which Boulevard beer pairs best with Kansas City BBQ?” We’ve long believed that Pale Ale loves cow and that it’s the perfect partner for brisket and burnt ends and that Tank 7 rocks with smoky chicken wings, but given the incredible amount of (delicious) fun we’ve had brewing incredibly small batches for our friends and neighbors as part of the Brewhouse One Series, we’re excited to share that we’ve done it! It’s time to unleash Turnt Ends – Kansas City Brown Ale, the ultimate BBQ beer!

Eschewing our traditional two-row pale base malt, we’ve pulled out the big guns for Turnt Ends to create a massive, sticky palate enveloping experience that’s certain to blow minds and wreck palates while masterfully matching with pulled pork, beef ribs and even delicate smoked salmon. Using brown sugar to lay down a sweet base featuring notes of caramel and molasses, our team selected a blend of sea salt, garlic, tangy white vinegar and black pepper for kettle additions to provide just enough balance to the sugary sweetness. Near the end of the brewing process, similar to the way we’d dry-hop a traditional beer, Turnt Ends is dry-rubbed with onion powder, ground mustard, crushed red pepper and just a splash of lemon juice to provide a subtle tartness that keeps you coming back for another sip.

When pouring your first glass of Turnt Ends, expect bright notes of garden fresh tomatoes, spicy black pepper, soy sauce and gobs of hickory and white oak smoke to leap from a tulip carrying a deep garnet/mahogany hue. Incredibly viscous due to a high finishing gravity, our Kansas City Brown Ale envelops the palate delivering the flavors promised by the aroma with subtle heat and a kiss of acidity to provide a crisp snap to the finish.
