Black Pale Ale and Belgian-style IPA

Posted July 1, 2015

Category: Beers

Fall of 2015 will see the fifth rotation in our Sample Twelve pack featuring two year-round beers and two Tasting Room beers. Created to allow our brewers the chance to experiment with new styles and recipes, the line of Tasting Room beers also gives Boulevard fans the chance to try beers that were previously only available in our Tasting Room. Joining year-round favorites Pale Ale and Unfiltered Wheat Beer will be Black Pale Ale and Belgian-style IPA.

Black Pale Ale pours very dark in color, but doesn’t feature roasted/chocolate flavors due to the use of a small percentage of Midnight Wheat in a malt bill composed of our two row base pale malt and Cara 300. Midnight Wheat adds deep color to beer without adding the flavors you’d typically extract from darker specialty malts as there aren't husks to provide the bitterness and astringency associated with heavily roasted barley. Featuring sizable charges of Chinook, Simcoe and Cascade on the brewhouse for an herbal/piney hop character, Black Pale Ale drinks like an American Pale Ale is 5.7 ABV and 35 IBUs.

Belgian-style IPA takes inspiration from Single-Wide IPA's malt bill to provide balance and support to a hop schedule composed of Chinook for bittering and Bravo and Cascade for citrus flavor and aroma. After fermentation with our house Belgian yeast strain, Belgian-style IPA is dry hopped with a blend of Calypso, Cascade and Chinook hops. Pouring copper in color, the beer bursts with spicy phenolics and fruity esters that mingle with bright hop notes of apple, pear and pine. Situated at the intersection of our expertise with Belgian yeast and our love for American hops, Belgian-style IPA is 5.7 ABV with 57 IBUs.

Tasting Room – Black Pale Ale and Belgian-style IPA will be available exclusively in our Sample Twelve pack and on draft in the Tasting Room at our brewery. A few kegs might make it out for special events and festivals, but you shouldn’t expect to see these beers as a regular draft in bars and restaurants.

As always with our Tasting Room beers, we’re interested in hearing what you have to say. Drink these beers and provide feedback.
